I halved this recipe and made it exactly as written. It didn't specify in the recipe, but I melted the butter in the microwave before making the batter. I made waffles in my Belgium waffle maker, and then topped it off with chocolate syrup, sliced bananas, whipped cream and a sprinkle of cocoa powder. Yummy! Made for Jan 2010 Comfort Cafe.

They turned out pretty nicely. I added walnuts and a 1/2t baking soda for fluffiness.

I made these this morning, oh, my, were they rich and good. I melted the butter and it worked very well. I try to stick to recipes pretty close the first time, next time I may cut back a bit on the butter (then again, they were soooo good the way they were) and add extra water as someone else suggested. We all loved them, made six waffles, but, so rich, could only eat one a piece anyway. Great recipe, thanks!

Oh, wow! I prepared the batter this morning so that DH could cook them when he got up. We topped them with strawberries macerated in sugar with whipped topping squeezed through a plastic bag with a corner cut off (like a piping bag). I am sitting here with the creation on my lap, and it's also half-gone. I plan to make "chocolate waffle-plate" sundaes if there are any left over. This is one of those recipes that 'Zaar needs to make 10-star ratings for!

This was a fabulous recipe which I tweaked a little to make it a touch healthier. I cut the sugar to 1 cup and the butter to 1/2 a cup making up the difference with water. I also added one teaspoon of baking powder and it made about 7 waffles on a round waffle maker. The kids adored them and I am seriously thinking of making this for my son's birthday party in July. They would make delightful little chocolatety snacks (divided into the heart-shaped segments) with whipped cream and a slice of fruit on top.

These are a bit different in texture than a regular waffle, but make a very nice treat for breakfast. They are very cake like and the batter is thick, not that those are bad things, just something I thought to mention :) The flavor is wonderful!

Great tasting waffles! They are like having brownies for breakfast. My family has requested them again and again.

These certainly live up to their name! My fiance and I just received a new waffle iron for Christmas, much to my delight (I *love* waffles!), so I decided to ring in the new year by whipping up a batch of these yummy treats for our first breakfast -- ok, brunch! :) -- of 2009. They were a hit! We prefer dark chocolate, so I used a dark chocolate cocoa, but otherwise made exactly as written. I was afraid that they would be too sweet for our tastes, but my fiance (who is a great cook in his own right) and our roomie agreed that they are *perfect* -- not one thing should be changed. We also agreed that it would be equally good used as a dessert. I think these are sublime when topped with nothing more than a hint of melted butter, but fresh strawberries or cherry preserves would be terrific, too. :yummy:

My dh really likes these waffles. I have made them a few times now and also freeze the extras for him to reheat in the toaster. I prefer them fresh off the iron when they are still soft. very good with whipped cream. thanks for posting!

We really liked these. I made a half-recipe, and we got 3 large round waffles out of it. I wasn't sure what to do with the butter so I melted it...this seemed to work out fine. I mixed it all together with my immersion blender and the batter was ready in no time flat. Although these were very soft when coming out of the iron, they crisped up after they cooled for a few minutes (which is good, because I like them crispy). One last note - these took a lot longer to bake for me than the recipe indicated, at least 5 minutes. Thanks for sharing!

DECADENT. this tastes like a brownie for breakfast. mine turned out fairly soft and not as crisp as normal waffles but it was still so good.

My family and I thoroughly enjoy having this on Sunday mornings. It's like having chocolate cake for breakfast. These freeze well for snacking.

Gail, these were amazing waffles. They tasted just like brownies. It made a slightly crisp, soft and dense waffle, full of chocolate flavour. I got 12 waffles from this recipe. I froze the rest...to pop into the toaster and enjoy whenever I like. Thanks so much for sharing this lovely treat.

Very yummy. I agree with Marg's review that the batter was more like brownie batter, resulting in a softer and very rich waffle. I also was confused about what to do with the butter and had a little mess with trying to incorporate the butter by adding all the ingredients at once. Next time I will cream the butter with the suger before adding the remaining ingredients. I have a 7 inch round waffle maker, so the recipe made 4 waffles. Thanks for posting!

The taste was excellent, but my only problem was that they were a little too heavy for us. We could hardly finish one each. Served them with strawberries and whipped cream. Will definitely be making them again, but not serve more than one to anyone. Thanks Gail Doyle :)

This is a great recipe. I loved the way that the walffles came out. I melted the butter and add a little more water and they came out perfect. I loved them.

I wasn't sure if the butter should just be softened or melted since the recipe didn't say. I went with softened and I think it was a mistake. The batter was like a brownie batter and definitely not pourable. The flavor was good (also similar to a brownie) but they are a soft waffle, not crisp. They did firm up once they were completely cooled, frozen and toasted. The kids loved them. Thanks for sharing!

Great Waffles! My son wanted vanilla & chocolate waffles, so I divided the batter & added only 1 Tbsp cocoa to that bowl. It was just about right.

This was easy to make and my son loves it. In fact, he loves it so much he now makes it while I just watch and eat.
